India’s medical inflation stands at 14% more than twice as high as the retail inflation. Moreover, it represents the highest medical inflation in Asia. (Reference: Health Report of Corporate India 2023)
Approximately 66% of households in the lowest group of monthly per capita expenditure use their personal savings to meet medical expenses. Another 5% obtain financial assistance from friends or relatives, while 28% resort to borrowing money or selling assets.
A minimal percentage, less than 1%, rely on alternative sources, including protection schemes, to address the financial burden of hospitalized treatment. (Reference: India’s Healthcare Burden on the Rise, January 2024)
Support for Individuals
Medical crises can break the backbone of families. The high cost of medical care is hard to bear for underprivileged as well as middle-class families. Many times, the families exhaust all their savings in managing the crisis, leaving nothing for their other needs such as the education of the children.
Medical expenses impact various aspects, ranging from the prices of medications to medical treatments and procedures. For example, the cost of hospitalization in India has more than doubled in the past five years, raising concerns.
According to the Indian Journal of Public Health Research – a significant number of households in India lack the financial resources to cover the costs of hospitalization.
How Adhyan Supports
At Adhyan, we work directly with the hospital and provide financial support to the family. This support covers their medical expenses as well as critical needs at home. Our goal is to reduce the pressure on the family and enable them to deal with the emergency in the best way possible.
We also support women with children in need of special education. The financial support enables the parent to access the facilities needed to support their child. Our team also provides emotional support to the parent who can be isolated from family and social support.
Manjunath's Story
A 21-year-old boy had a bike accident and was in ICU on a ventilator for 15 days in Manipal Hospital, Bangalore. His father, a retired person, struggled with the mounting bills. He approached Adhyan, and we were able to settle some of the bills and give them hope when the son’s leg was amputated. Our follow-up will continue.
As part of our community initiatives, we extend support to people in need from all strata.
Manjunath's Story
My 21-year-old boy met with a serious bike accident. He was in ICU on a ventilator for more than 15 days in Manipal Hospital Bangalore.
I am a retired person and was finding it extremely challenging to meet the mounting hospital bills with my savings.
I approached Adhyan for help in settling some of the bills. I sincerely thank them for their generous donation. I really appreciate their help and the money couldn’t have arrived at a better time!
One of the members of Adhyan visited us in the hospital when my son was out of ICU and spoke to us. The lady was very empathetic and compassionate to our suffering as my son had his leg amputated at the thigh.
He was feeling depressed and weak. The lady spoke encouraging words to my son and me and said that everything is not lost and that he could still lead a near-normal life with a prosthetic limb. Very inspiring and uplifting words.
I thank Adhyan from the bottom of my heart not only for their financial assistance but also for making us feel optimistic and look forward to a near-normal life for my son.
