Adhyan aspires to give hope and invest in women and children to give them significant and long lasting benefits in quality of life, productivity, health, economic and social well-being. The WHO’s Survive, Thrive, Transform Global Strategy for Women’s, Children’s and Adolescents’ Health (2016–2030) highlights the lacunae in our current system. We at Adhyan believe that we can help alleviate some of these gaps. Our partners are meticulously chosen for their alignment with our purpose and their extensive experience in their respective fields of expertise. We partner with individuals, schools and organisations working in the following fields.

Women Empowerment

Women play a vital role in our society, and yet are the most disadvantaged. Research demonstrates that healthy women are the backbone of our communities. Strategies that provide investment and interventions in their education and well-being over their lifetime allows for better health and well-being outcomes.

At Adhyan we believe that empowering women is one of the key drivers of global change. As women rise, so do their children, families, and society as a whole. We enable women with the skills, tools and conviction that they need to rise out of the most challenging circumstances.

Health

Women

Approximately 195 million women are affected by kidney disease worldwide. In India more than 80% of women who are diagnosed with chronic kidney disease are abandoned by their spouses and families. In some cases, they are abandoned with their young children. The total number of women dying due to kidney disease is grossly underestimated in India because of a lack of a kidney dialysis registry. 70% of dialysis patients in India are male reflecting the gender disparity in access to treatment. In most cases the increased financial burden of dialysis coupled with additional medical, nutritional expenses not to mention the psychological impact of the illness on the patient create huge barriers for women in particular to have access to dialysis.

Children

In India, more than 200,000 children are born with congenital heart disease (CHD) every year. Of these cases nearly 60,000 to 90,000 suffer from critical issues and need early intervention. Only a small percentage of these children have access to sophisticated cardiac treatment. Financial constraints, community health-seeking behaviour, a lack of awareness and information are all obstacles to their receiving appropriate cardiac care. While this is a problem in both urban and rural settings, parents in rural settings tend to struggle a lot more, especially because of the astronomical medical costs involved and lack of facilities in their vicinity.

Special Education

Special education is immensely important to children with learning disabilities, because it gives them the opportunity to get quality education in line with their unique needs and gain a high level of independence. It’s not a “one size fits all” approach — special education must be tailored to meet the needs of individual children.

Shocking statistics from the Census of India, 2011 shows that while 89% of children with learning disabilities are enrolled in primary school, only 8.5% actually go to secondary school and only 2.3% of the children reach higher secondary.

Community Initiatives

Daily life can be a huge challenge for people, affected by earthquakes, floods, accidents, poverty and/or and health crises leading to various physical and mental health issues. These circumstances can wreak havoc on the normal everyday living of human beings. Studies show how our environment, random events, stress, health care, social, cultural, psychological and family relationship factors contribute to the causes and consequences of disease and illness overcome crisis situations.
